“Leaf Arabesque” new garden sculpture in mild steel.
Falling Autumn leaves is the inspiration for this recent piece “Leaf Arabesque” in mild steel.
The sculpture combines the contrasting effects of falling and balancing to create a fragile equilibrium.
Watching the Autumn leaves fall every year prompts in me reflections on the passing of time and life experiences. As family and loved ones grow up, age or pass on these reflections create a melancholic, bittersweet emotion as happy memories mix with a little sadness.
In life we are constantly readjusting to accommodate changes whilst trying to keep our physical and mental health in balance. It can be difficult to know when its right to let go of the past and embrace a new future, feelings of uncertainty and vulnerability often accompany times of change.
In observing changes in nature it is always comforting to be reassured that when one season ends another one begins.
I hope my sculpture inspires feelings of growth development and reflection.⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
The sculpture was created in collaboration with the Traditional Co in Leicestershire using slim steel bands, the effect is light and airy in appearance. The dancing leaf shapes balance as if caught by the breeze and create spaces through which various elements of the background and surrounding environment are framed. These views constantly change as the sculpture is approached from different angles.
Created in mild steel from cold rolled flat bar the sculpture stands 180cm high by 120cm wide and 10 cm deep. The surface will gradually turn a rust/ orange colour as oxidisation takes place. My workshop markings are left on the surface until the sculpture is situated in it’s final position when they will be used for alignment during installation and will then be removed.
