Hello, I’m Jane!
I’m a visual artist based in Stamford, Lincolnshire, in the east of England. I studied art at Cambridge College of Arts and Technology, Edinburgh College of Art, and Montpellier École des Beaux Arts in south west France.
Alongside my own art practice, I spent many years teaching art while also caring for my family. I love living in the rural countryside of Lincolnshire and my work is inspired by the rhythms of the natural world; its balance and continuity; cycles of growth, decay, strength and fragility.
This body of work has grown from repeated visits to Arcadia Garden a unique, experimental garden in Sheffield. Arcadia’s naturalistic perennial planting, full of beauty and transformation, has provided endless inspiration which has shaped the resulting drawings paintings and sculpture.
I’d like to say a huge Thank You to Doug Baker and Charlotte Liu for their generosity in welcoming me into their wonderful garden and allowing me to visit and draw so often.
I’m very proud to share this collection with you, and I invite you to explore the pieces and discover more!

In Arcadia Ego – I am In Paradise –
Introduction By Georgie Vartan
In a time increasingly defined by environmental uncertainty, naturalistic perennial gardening has become more than just a horticultural trend: it offers a way to reconnect with the natural world – to observe slow change, nurture living systems, and find joy in what endures. Against this backdrop, In Arcadia Ego – I am in Paradise – provides an artistic counterpart: a portrait of one garden and the emotional, sensory, and reflective experiences it inspires…

“Jane’s art project invites us, as designers to see our garden anew - through the rhythm of seasons, the contrast of textures, and the quiet poetry of its shifting forms. She has not merely recorded its changes, but revealed the beauty of a landscape where time, texture, and life are gently interwoven.” - Doug Baker & Charlotte Liu - CLMI Chartered Landscape Architects for Arcadia Landscape & Design Ltd.

“Jane has a wonderful talent. The first concepts for this project started with a visit to our garden in Cornwall. I can see this clearly. Her paintings emanate the heat of late spring and the scent of flowers in full bloom.” - Anna C Wilson - Author
The Inspiration Behind
In Arcadia Ego
-I Am In Paradise-
This exhibition invites you to experience the garden not just as a place, but as a metaphor for memory, renewal, development and change.
Over the past three years I’ve been making visits to Arcadia Garden in Sheffield, a unique naturalistic, perennial garden created by landscape architects Doug Baker and Charlotte Liu, both alumni of the department of Landscape Design at Sheffield University. The garden incorporates different habitats including woodland, meadows tall herbaceous planting. Like any garden it is constantly changing with the seasons. I’ve spent many hours drawing directly from life, striving to capture those shifting moments as the garden moves through its seasonal cycle.
Paintings and sculptural forms develop my experience and the information and gathered in my drawings. The paintings grow in rather the same way as a garden. I begin with watery washes of thin, fluid acrylic to create pools of colour and shadow. In painting terms this is also known the “ground”. The next layer may be more puddles of acrylic, allowing the paint to settle, using watercolour techniques to create overlapping, transparent tones and colours .
Next I add the structure of the main areas of planting. I rub patches of oil paint onto the canvas, often with newspaper and always make reference to my drawings when mixing tones and colours carefully. This is one of my favourite stages of the painting!
Paintbrush strokes and other marks define the characteristics of the plants that feature in my composition, I’m always careful to be very authentic to the original drawing, I rarely add anything which wasn’t in the original drawing as I aim to keep the paiting as authentic as possible to my response at that particular moment in time.
Golden Day with Grasses and Sedum, Arcadia Garden. 120cm x 150cm Oil and acrylic on canvas
Emerald Woodland Edge, June 1st, Arcadia Garden 75cm x101.5cm Acrylic and oil on canvas
The garden is an incredibly complex environment with infinite detail, depth and multi layered vegetation. Recreating the effect is often a challenging process in which I lose myself for untold hours, immersed in colours, tones and marks.
The piece Emerald Woodland Edge, June 1st, Arcadia Garden represents the early spring growth at the edge of the sheltered woodland. The painting is full of dynamic, verdant spring growth, inspiring feelings of optimism and hope. The dark background shadows contrast starkly and accentuate the vitality of the fresh growth.
In the painting Golden Days, With Grasses and Sedum , Arcadia Garden I used warm coloured glazes to bathe the painting in a golden Autumn light as the season fades into Winter.
In Arcadia Ego - I Am In Paradise - brings together the artworks that grew out of my visits to Arcadia Garden, but they are not just about the appearance of the plants and trees, they are really about how it feels to be there; the sense of stillness, reflections on Life itself and connection to nature.
I hope as you view the artworks, you will find the same calmness that I did and feel restored and soothed.
I’m so excited to finally share my last few years’ work with you!
I hope you enjoy it!
